Job Title: Business Development Consultant

Reports To: Sales Director

Jobs Reporting into the Job Holder: None

Salary: £22K - £25K with an OTE of £32K

1. Job Purpose:

The primary role of the Business Development Consultant is to actively engage with employers through a variety of methods, to identify high quality apprenticeship opportunities in the East Midlands. This role will have a particular focus on Accountancy and Payroll in Derby and Nottingham.


Under the supervision of the Sales Director, you will work closely with the Learner Engagement Consultant to supply our employers with suitable applicants that meet the requested person specification.


You will be a consultative sales professional with a passion for education, working with young adults and the success of our local business community.

This role offers a clear, structured progression route, which could see the successful applicant progressing to Business Development Manager and ultimately Head of Sales.

2. Main Responsibilities:

The role of the Business Development Consultant will include but is not necessarily limited to the following duties:

  • Achieve monthly target of 6 apprenticeship starts (this KPI will be introduced from month 3)

  • Always maintain a vacancy pool of circa 8 -10 live vacancies to support starts target

  • Generate new apprenticeship vacancies aimed at our target demographic of applicants aged 16-24, through a variety of methods, including:

   - New business and account management calls

   - Creating and sharing engaging social media content aimed at employers

   - Sourcing and attending local networking events to build strong business relationships and  build brand awareness

   - Achieving referrals from clients as a result of providing outstanding customer service

   - Develop strategic partnerships with local organisations such as the LEP, Chamber of Commerce, Marketing Derby etc.

  • Identify opportunities for local businesses to upskill their workforce by recommending suitable apprenticeship programmes in addition to EMA’s commercial offering.

  • Work with the Learner Engagement Consultant to arrange apprenticeship interviews with both the employer and candidates.

  • Ensure all leads and referrals occurring from internal or external parties are followed up within 1 working day to maximise opportunities.

  • Support the Learner Engagement Consultant with any school events & careers fairs when required

  • Undertake regular research to ensure that you remain up to date with changes and developments within the sector, subscribing to relevant e-newsletters from ESFA, RAA, OFSTED etc

  • Complete all associated sales administration in a timely and accurate manner

  • Adopt a proactive approach to complying with the staff development policy in ensuring you are up to date in your occupational area(s) and adopt a best practice approach to any training and learning.

  • Ensure contract compliance in line with set targets and service delivery.

3. Required Skills and Personal Qualities:


  • Excellent Communication Skills

  • Intelligent and Articulate

  • The ability to build and nurture relationships

  • The ability to collaborate with others and contribute towards targets

  • A proven track-record in B2B or B2C Sales

  • Experience of delivering high level of service and satisfaction.

  • Ability to work independently

  • Involvement of managing databases / CRM systems for lead generation.

  • Ability to self-motivating to achieve KPIs


  • A full drivers’ licence, access to own vehicle

  • Knowledge of the AAT and CIPP qualifications

  • Commercial Sales Qualification

  • Experience of selling Government funded training

  • Working knowledge of labour market information

  • Strong presentation skills

  • Knowledge of the Awarding Organisations, Funding Bodies and Ofsted regulatory arrangements

Further Information

The role will be based at EMA’s training hub in Derby but will include travel to attend visits, jobs fairs and recruitment open days.
