Role Profile

The role of an Information Communications Technician is to deliver efficient operation and control of the IT or Telecommunications infrastructure (comprising physical or virtual hardware, software, network services, and data storage) either on-premises or to end-users provisioned as cloud services that are required to deliver and support the information systems needs of an organisation. In all sectors, and within public, private and voluntary organisations. Apprentices can choose a specialist route from the following; Support Technician, Digital Communication Technician, or Networking Technician route.

Breakdown of Course Content

Level 3

Information Communication Technician Core Knowledge

Apprentices will study the technical skills needed to help meet the growing demand for junior ICT professionals. The curriculum covers the basic knowledge of computers, mobile device hardware, and software while introducing advanced security and networking concepts and the responsibilities of an ICT professional. Upon completion, the apprentice will undertake a hands-on practical skills assessment which will earn them a Cisco-accredited certificate.

Introduction to IT & Networking

Apprentices will study the technical skills needed to help meet the growing demand for junior ICT professionals. The curriculum covers the basic knowledge of computers, mobile device hardware, and software while introducing advanced security and networking concepts and the responsibilities of an ICT professional. Upon completion, the apprentice will undertake a hands-on practical skills assessment which will earn them a Cisco-accredited certificate.

Introduction to Server Management

In this module, our learners will study a range of fundamental concepts and the technologies of Windows Server administration, Windows-based networking, Active Directory, account management, and system recovery tools and concepts.

Introduction to Network Security

Apprentices will study Defence in Depth, covering and identifying core security principles like CIA Triad, threat, risk, vulnerability, the principle of least privilege (PoLP), and attack surfaces including IoT. Learners will also study Operating System Security, Network Device Security, and Secure Computing. Upon completion of this module, learners will earn an industry-recognised certification.

Fundamentals of Cloud Services

In this module, learners will study the basics of cloud computing, and the Microsoft Azure and 365 Cloud Platforms, including virtualisation, containerisation, and descriptions of cloud concepts, such as SaaS, PaaS, and IaaS. Apprentices will learn, cloud deployment models such as Private, Public, Hybrid, and Community clouds. Upon completion of this module, learners will earn a Microsoft certification.

Level 3

Scripting languages for IT practitioners

Apprentices will gain a general overview of the command line interface and the command line scripts. They will study automating tasks in Windows and Linux, file and directory operations in Windows and Linux. Our apprentices will learn how to perform systems administration tasks in Windows and identify diagnostics for networking, file systems, security, and processes. They will also cover, syntax of scripting languages, with a focus on PowerShell, Windows DOS command line, and Linux shell commands, common algorithms that may be used on a day-to-day basis by an Information Communication Technician.
