Job Title: Accounts Apprentice

1. Job Purpose:

This apprenticeship trains you to work in an accounts department, helping a business or organisation manage their money properly.

Apprentices who qualify as accounting technicians might work as accounts assistants, credit control clerks, accounts clerks, or finance assistants, all helping accountants to keep financial records and prepare accounts.

You’ll learn how to:

• balance accounts

• process invoices and payments

• complete VAT returns

• help prepare financial statements and reports

• handling banking and petty cash.

If you complete the higher apprenticeship, you can progress to full membership of the Association of Accounting Technicians. You could then complete a professional accountancy qualification with a chartered body.

2. Main Responsibilities:

Specific Duties for this role are split into:

  • Accountancy duties

  • General office duties

All duties are to be completed when required; daily, weekly, monthly or ad hoc:

Accountancy duties

  • Completion of Sage EMA Training LTD including the raising of Sales invoices/Petty cash/Bank reconciliations/posting purchase invoices.

  • Completion of QuickBooks DRFC including Sales Invoices/Petty Cash/Bank reconciliations/posting purchase invoices.

  • Comparing all monthly payments, putting together a report that is to be shared and discussed.


General office duties:

  • ·         Answering the telephone and taking messages.

  • ·         Chase AAT, Functional Skills Certificates that have been ordered.

  • ·         Manage and answer website enquiries.

  • ·         Make hot and cold drinks for visitors and staff when required.

  • ·         Maintain the office and training spaces, including polishing and hoovering.

  • ·         Provide daily email updates at the end of every shift to provide an update on what            has been achieved.

  • ·         Prepare and attend weekly Friday reviews to discuss completed work and plans for following week.

  • ·         Attend any exhibitions when required, on any day that they take place.

  • ·         Book assessments, including Initial Assessments/functional skills/ AAT etc.

  • ·         Filing paperwork and keeping the files in an orderly and easy to use system.

  •          Attend and complete the AAT lesson and coursework each week, replacing the office duties to be carried out that day.

3. Requirements of Knowledge, Experience, Technical Skills and Behaviours​


  • Interest in accounting

  • Excellent numerical skills - be highly numerate with a desire to develop a career Finance

  • Computer literate

  • Great interpersonal skills, being approachable and having a confident manner to deal with colleagues and customers

  • Excellent communication skills – have a high level of written and verbal communication

  • Good telephone manner

  • Ability to multi-task with excellent organisational skill

  • Attention to detail and a high level of accuracy

  • Capability to meet established deadlines

  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team, both within the finance department and the wider Company


  • An A-level (or other appropriate qualification) in Accounting

  • Experience within an office environment

  • Grade A-C in Maths and English or equivalent

Further Information

This is an office-based role in Derby but will include travel to attend visits, jobs fairs and recruitment open days..
