Now is The Time to Invest in Apprenticeships with Government Funding

Why Apprenticeships Aren’t Just for New Hires banner image

For many growing organisations, recruiting skilled employees and managing rising training costs can be a significant challenge. Fortunately, recent UK government funding changes have made apprenticeships one of the most cost-effective ways for employers to attract, develop, and retain talent.

From 1 August, eligible employers can benefit from increased government support for apprenticeship training, making it easier than ever to invest in workforce development. Combined with existing National Insurance savings, apprenticeships now offer businesses a practical and affordable route to closing skills gaps while building a pipeline of future talent.

Whether you’re recruiting new employees or developing your existing workforce, there has never been a better time to invest in apprenticeships.

100% Government-Funded Apprenticeship Training

One of the biggest barriers to hiring apprentices has traditionally been the cost of training. Thanks to updated government funding, that barrier has been significantly reduced.

For eligible apprentices aged 16 to 24, the UK Government will fund 100% of apprenticeship training costs (up to the maximum funding band limit). Employers also continue to benefit from 0% employer Class 1 National Insurance contributions on apprentice earnings up to £50,270 per year, creating substantial payroll savings alongside fully funded training.

For apprentices aged 25 and over, employers can still access 95% government funding, with businesses contributing just 5% towards training costs.

These incentives make apprenticeships one of the highest-return investments available for organisations looking to grow sustainably while controlling recruitment and development costs.

Why Apprenticeships Make Good Business Sense

Apprenticeships are much more than a cost-saving exercise. They provide employers with an opportunity to develop people with the exact skills their organisation needs while creating loyal, engaged employees who understand the business from day one.

Key benefits include:

  • Reduce recruitment and training costs by accessing government-funded apprenticeship programmes.
  • Address critical skills shortages by training employees in the knowledge and practical skills your business requires.
  • Improve employee retention, as apprentices who develop within an organisation are often more engaged and committed to long-term careers.
  • Increase productivity, with apprentices contributing to real projects while completing their qualification.
  • Build a stronger future workforce by investing in people who understand your company culture, systems, and values.

As skills shortages continue across many industries, apprenticeships provide a sustainable solution that benefits both employers and employees.

Two Simple Steps to Building Your Workforce

Starting an apprenticeship programme doesn’t have to be complicated.

1. Identify Your Skills Needs

Review your current workforce and identify where additional support or future talent is needed. This may include filling entry-level positions, replacing retiring staff, or developing specialist technical skills within your team.

2. Choose the Right Apprenticeship Standard

Select an apprenticeship programme that aligns with your business objectives and industry requirements. An accredited apprenticeship standard ensures your apprentice gains recognised qualifications while developing practical workplace skills that deliver value from the outset.

Choosing the right programme helps maximise both government funding and long-term business impact.
