EMA Runs the Payroll Journey

EMA Training, the leading provider of Finance related Apprenticeships in the East Midlands have recently launched the Payroll Administrator Apprenticeship Programme. Lasting 12 months, embedding the CIPP professional membership status within the Apprenticeship adds additional value to this Apprenticeship and provides for the recognition of individuals that set up and run payrolls for organisations of all shapes and sizes.

EMA is one of very few providers nationally to offer this standard and we are already seeing good participation at our Hub in Derby with our first group of learners already started and we have created a model that is scalable across the East Midlands.

We have now been selected to join the Trailblazer Supporting Bodies group to assist in the development of the proposed new L5 Payroll Assistant Manager Qualification.

Ian Holloway of CINTRA who established the Trailblazer for the new Level 5 Standard said

‘In 2018, together with the Trailblazer, I was pleased to be able to develop and deliver the Level 3 Payroll Administrator Apprenticeship to the profession. The Standard and End-Point Assessment Plan have been written to ensure that successful apprentices will achieve this professional qualification and be equipped with the knowledge, skills and behaviours that the profession needs. Following delivery, the natural progression was to a Level 5 Payroll Assistant Manager apprenticeship and this is currently being developed. Another Trailblazer has been formed, tasked with developing a professional apprenticeship qualification that fully meets the needs of the payroll profession – a payroll qualification scoped by employers working in the payroll profession that know what the industry needs. Assisting the Trailblazer is the ‘supporting bodies’ group comprised of individuals and organisations who provide guidance as and when required. I am pleased to have Tracey Mosley from EMA Training as part of this group. As a provider of the Level 3 apprenticeship, it is essential that we engage throughout the development of Level 5. After all, there is little point the Trailblazer developing an apprenticeship that meets the needs of the profession if the qualification is actually undeliverable at the end.’

Tracey Mosley, CEO of EMA Said

‘It is National Apprenticeship Week and we are delighted to have been involved in this group. There are thousands of staff involved in the preparation and management of payrolls across the country and millions of us are reliant upon them to process and get right our pay every month. They work tirelessly to make the payroll run and can never miss a deadline given it is so critical to everyone.

We are delighted to have launched the L3 Standard and now to be invited to participate in the development of the L5 Manager Standard. We are seeing many companies interested in supporting their existing and new staff to gain an Apprenticeship in this critical area of our business lives.

In developing the new standard, it is vital we get the views of as many employers as we can. I therefore urge any employers that want to get involved with what you want to see in the new Apprenticeship standard to contact me at tracey.Mosley@ematraining.co.uk.

The kettle is always on at EMA and we would love to show you what we are doing and get your thoughts on the new payroll qualifications which are being launched soon’

Dr Sue Smith, Educational Director at CIPP added

‘The CIPP are delighted to support EMA Training and the development of new practitioners into the world of payroll. The Payroll Administrator apprenticeship provides the opportunity to learn the skills, knowledge and behaviours to become competent in the extremely valuable task of paying employees accurately and on time; whilst enabling the apprentice to learn the fundamental principles whilst ‘on the job’. This is the start of their career and the apprenticeship provides the perfect opportunity to build the foundations to a progressive and exciting future in payroll. ‘
